One of the ways that I acknowledged April as Sarcoidosis Awareness Month was to host my 1st Annual Marilyn’s Fight for Life KICK Sarcoidosis Balloon Release Event on April 5, 2014. I have to say, it was a success! I was very proud to be in attendance with such strong Sarcoidosis Warriors and Advocates. We enjoyed sharing each others stories and supported each other as a family because that is what we are. We are all battling this invisible, debilitating, incurable illness that has affected us all in similar but also very different ways.

I was honored to meet Wayne Hunter, Karen Randolph, Nicole Goldsboro and Anne Glass who attend the Sharon Railing Sarcoidosis Support Group here in Delaware. It’s been very hard for me to attend but they are looking for means of making it more accessible for others like me. What people do not understand is the biggest help to spread awareness about this disease is not the patient’s themselves.  Many of us are so busy fighting to live that we have a hard time doing what you are seeing being done just this month alone.  Most of the support and campaigning is done by volunteers.  Sometimes they are your family members but most of the time they are those who take an interest in your cause and see that it is important to get the information to those who need it.  I met two of those volunteers on Saturday afternoon. My first conversation with Nicole was, “how can I help to make your event a success?”.  Anne just wanted to be there to help and meet other Sarcoidosis warriors.  You see, these women didn’t have to volunteer to help our cause but they did.  I thanked them for all of their help. We were pleased to welcome Linda and her husband Dave who drove down from Jersey to attend our event and welcomed her into our group. Dr. Owen Brown Jr. wowed us with his talk about our first step in improving our health. He definitely opened everyone’s eyes because he asked the right questions and answered those that other doctors refuse to.  If you don’t know about him, you can find his link on my Marilyn’s Fight for Life page.  What he has to say will change your life.

So many friends and family drove from near and far to be in attendance to so support for my cause and I love them so much for that. Tammie Murphy and Courtney Muhammad, my sisters, where would I be without you guys in my corner. Family is love and no matter what may be going on in our individual lives, when we need each other, we are there. Rae Luster, you have been my true sister/friend ever since I moved to this State. I appreciate the love and support that I receive from you and your children. Many people have turned their backs on me because they couldn’t deal with the disease, but you have been right there all the time. That is a true testament to any friendship. Vernon Keith Ruffin Jr. and Andrea ‘Cakes’ Darden, you guys came through for me and as my little brother and sister, I got you. You know what that means.

Again, my family thought we couldn’t get this going because of my many, many trying days as well as the many things that we have on our plate during this time; but this cause means more to us than many know.  We live with the disease daily and it takes a toll on all of us which is why we are fighting our fight.  We must spread awareness and maybe then we can find a cure.

The campaign is far from over. Continue to spread Sarcoidosis Awareness.  Donations can be made by visiting  We are looking forward to planning our next event. It was an experience that we will never forget.

Momma Emma Carroll, we love you!!!!
